‘Date’ fails to make a good impression
Brian Herzlinger might be the lamest documentary filmmaker of all time. I am the kind of person who will watch a documentary about virtually anything, and I tend to like them all; it’s my favorite art form. But Herzlinger’s My Date with Drew, out this month, is really pushing it. He decided the best way to use this money was to buy a camcorder at Circuit City, spend a month trying to get a date with Drew Barrymore, film all of his bad decisions, and then return the camcorder before Circuit City’s thirty-day return policy expired.

Also, when he meets her, he interrupts her greeting by blurting out, “Oh my god, you’re so beautiful! This is a horror film. This is Hitchcockian. This man is a creepazoid to the max. The cringiest movie on the goddamn planet.

As quirky and subtle as the title may sound, this docu was exactly what i wanted and more! What follows is a 30 days plus adventure from using Fake I. This move was fun, hilarious, well put together, and a good story to get that person at the bootom to the top! All about a man who had a crush on Drew since childhood. It is a real life search for Drew to go on a date for him. Charming and sweet movie.

What starts off as a self-serving promotional exercise takes on almost unreasonably charming dimensions in “My Date With Drew. By Justin Chang. The prophetic winning answer? Drew Barrymore. Simultaneously, Herzlinger and producer Kerry David repeatedly call the Barrymore camp as well as her Flower Films production shingle to try to get the actress to simply watch a second trailer for the project. Pic becomes a study of the impenetrability of Hollywood, not to mention its inefficiency, frequent miscommunication and flat-out laziness.
Some of the interview subjects seem to have been dragged on merely to indulge Herzlinger, mop up his self-pity and shower praise on his high-concept premise. Fortunately, pic improves immeasurably as it goes along, delivering a handful of terrifically inspired comic sequences, including a casting call for Drew look-alikes that goes hysterically awry. Their secret weapon turns out to be Barrymore herself, who is every bit as luminous as this cinematic shrine would lead one to expect.

We’ve all met brash, loudmouthed go-getters like Brian Herzlinger, the garrulous fuzzball who narrates the personal documentary “My Date With Drew. If they possess the charm to match their aggressiveness, chances are they will eventually wear down their prey. If they don’t, pushiness can turn into intimidation and pursuit into stalking; then it’s time to call the police. Fortunately, Mr. Herzlinger, who directed his home movie with Jon Gunn and Brett Winn, is a reasonably likable guy.
His screen presence, however, takes some getting used to. For the first 45 minutes of a cinematic stunt in which he invites us to be witnesses as he tries to meet his childhood heartthrob, Drew Barrymore, his obnoxiousness outweighs his charm. But in the second half of the movie, when he finally collapses into an excitable grown-up baby, his charm wins out.
He gives himself a deadline of 30 days to succeed.
